Question Moving to Omaha - NE or IA side to live?

I may land a job in Omaha. I've heard the Iowa side is cheaper/better. Can any tell me the pros, cons and opinions between living in Nebraska vs living in Iowa (Omaha Metro)? I have an eight year old so schools are important (NE or IA?)...

Both are great places! I live in Omaha and go to school in Council Bluffs so I get to see the best of both worlds. In my opinion, Omaha has better schools and a more diverse population. Council Bluffs is not as diverse, but still a nice area. The Bluffs have a more industrial feel to the south, more homes up north. There are a lot of very unique older neighborhoods east of 72nd street in Omaha as well as newer, more upscale development in west Omaha, La Vista (southwest of Omaha) and Bennington (northwest of Omaha). Home prices are cheaper in Council Bluffs, but Omaha homes are still very affordable. Property tax is higher in Nebraska but the homes are absolutely beautiful. People are generally friendly and hospitable wherever you go in the metro. I'm not too familiar with the Council Bluffs school district (specifically the elementary schools), but I have heard great things about Papillion, Millard, and District 66 (Westside) school districts, as well as the high schools in Council Bluffs. I went to Bellevue, which also has a solid reputation. It all really depends on what type of home you want, your price range and if you want a more urban or suburban feel to where you want to live. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions and I'll try to answer them as best as I can. Hope some of this helped. Welcome to Omaha!

Yes, the Iowa side (Council Bluffs) is a little cheaper, but the schools are absolute crap compared to Omaha. I would know, I attended school in both places.

Overall, I liked Council Bluffs, but I'd rather have Omaha ten times out of ten.

If schools/cost of living are your main concern, I'd stick with Omaha. Omaha is very cheap overall and the little money you'd save in Iowa would not make up for the loss in education.

Yes, I'd stick with Omaha as well. There are a lot more choices here.

Iowa is cheaper, however housing is lower quality. Also there is a higher percentage of banjo music being played through the broken glass.

Excuse me. You don't know crap. I am so sick and tired of people putting Council Bluffs down. It is a great place and the the schools are not crap. It is what you make of them. Plenty of high achievers in Council Bluffs Schools. Yes , there are low scores but that does not mean the schools are bad. It's the KIDS!!!! Some will never achieve. Plenty of those in Omaha too!!! I have lived in Omaha, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Calgary and I find Council Bluffs is quite charming.

I think you might need to lighten up a bit.

I lived in Council Bluffs and really liked it. Not as much as I like Omaha, but I still liked it. That being said, I also attended both OPS and CBCS, and the CB schools are a significant step below the OPS schools. I got a much better education in Omaha and know a few people who dealt with the same situation.

If it's any consolation, I will say that even CB schools blow most of the Florida schools right out of the water.
