Cotheran, Hollywood Diner, just north of downtown on 2214 Abbott Drive is about as "50's diner" as it gets around here. I've always had great food there. There are also some good burger joints just outside of downtown as well.
South of the zoo in Bellevue is a little hole-in-the-will burger joint named Stella's. I've never had a better patty melt.
Here's something I do to find a restaurant. Say you feel like Italian food. Just go to Google Maps and type in "Italian in Omaha, NE" or if you want a diner, "Diners in Omaha, NE" and it will give you a complete listing of the kind of restaurants you want in the metro.
Sheridan, unfortunately it will probably be pretty hot. Probably upper 80's to upper 90's range with the occasional day of over 100. It is also very humid. It does rain fairly often, which cools things down substantially. Autumn in Omaha is the time that will probably have the least amount of humidity, while the weather is still enjoyable.
