This display of profound ignorance, paranoia and racism by our West O Brethren is mind-boggling. Absolutely amazing - and not in a good way.

I am SO glad I live where I do, rather than out in Paranoid Redneckville.

Just to remind you not all of us are that way. So please stop using that label.

I'm Northwest Omaha, I guess I'm technically outside of the city limits. Although I still get to pay the wheel tax, but not vote for Omaha issues. Taxation without representation! That's another issue.

In any case. My neighborhood although relatively new and treeless, is very diverse. So are the areas that I frequent like the stores and other businesses around here.

But I'm not scared of other parts of town. I'm downtown often and have to head north out of downtown fairly regularly. Because I like to check out the supposedly bad areas of town I'll take 16th, or 20th, 24th, Florence Blvd, whatever I feel like and just check it out. You'll find a lot of ran down stuff there, but I don't ever really feel in danger. I'll see people that I suspect might be up to no good, but they aren't bothering me. I suspect the real issues come from down some of the side streets, but even then I'm sure the majority of the side streets have nothing going on.

Lauren, congratulations on Creighton Nursing School! You have picked a wonderful school!

My daughter is also a Creighton student... she has been there for three years, so I can share with you what her experience has been with the campus and that part of town.

My daughter walks all over that campus and all around that neighborhood. She walks from campus into downtown. Never had an issue.

She volunteered for two years at a school in the neighborhood just to the north of the campus. And she walked to get there. She never had an issue. Ever. (She does not go north of campus at night though.)

A lot of Creighton students rent houses in the 10 blocks or so just to the west of campus/medical center. There are also fraternity houses over there. My daughter has friends (both girls and boys) that have rented homes in that area and she has spent lots of time there. The university has a shuttle that runs through the area and picks up students and brings them to campus, so you don't need to worry about walking in rainy or snowy weather, or after dark. There was one incident there at night about a year ago... a Creighton student was standing out in his yard (at 3 am) and there was a drive by shooting and he was injured.

Last summer she had a job right smack in the middle of the blighted area that is known as "North Omaha". (Let me clarify that North Omaha is NOT the whole northeast quadrant, it's just one neighborhood/area of town) She took care of a whole bunch of underprivileged children in a summer-school program. She would drive about 10-15 minutes to the north of Creighton campus, to some of the most run down, very sad looking parts of town, and spend all day there, taking the kids out to the neighborhood park and pool, and she NEVER had a problem. (She was only there during the day. She did not go there after dark.)

My daughter did find a lovely Omaha neighborhood to rent a house in, and though I can not tell you it's location, because this is a public forum, there are many apartments and houses for rent, lots of friendly people and safe neighborhoods. Omaha is a great little city and I hope you enjoy it and Creighton U. as much as my daughter has.

I've lived in South Omaha almost 40 of my 49 years. I have never ever had any neighborhood issues! S.O. is one of the best places to raise a family or be a single female. I know am slightly out of SO into 42nd & Leavenworth and am know noticing more and more families with lots of kids here also. In my opinion, when checking for places to live...drive around the neighborhoods-are there little kids playing? Do you see neighbors out talking? How much garbage is on the street? Follow your gut instinct!

You're right.

What you will find in the east part of Omaha is houses whose front doors face the street. Front porches facing the street. They were built to be part of a neighborhood, not a castle unto themselves.

It's unfortunate that the "front" of virtually all new cookie-cutter suburban houses is the 3-car garage doors.
