I have recently moved to Bellevue, formerly a resident of the Benson area. I was a victim of an attempted carjacking. When I decided I liked my car and wanted it more than the thieves, I was shot at 3 times while trying to get away. I lived in Benson for 12 years with minor confrontations here and there, but never had a gun pulled on me before. This went from stealing to attempted murder in a hurry. I work in the field as a technician and have seen the flow of violence from North Omaha slowly seeping into other parts of town. Benson, Dundee, Northwest Omaha. Yes, there are crimes in all parts of the city, but most of the violent crimes are based and have migrated from the northeastern most part of town. The suspects (that have not yet been caught) that attempted to carjack me at gunpoint were, at my best approximation between 15 and 18 years old. This was at 47th and Miami, just after 1 A.M. I ask you...what are 3 teenagers doing with a firearm and out after 1 A.M. where are thier parents? Do they know what thier little gang bangers are doing? Do they care? Are they too coked up to care? To anyone in this post that say they are from North Omaha and are defending your precious territory...I ask this. Have you never thought, "Man, I can't stand all this violence so close to me, maybe I should check for a home in a more peaceful area of the city." If the answer is no, maybe you or part of your family are part of the problem.

What are YOU doing, at that time of the night, in that area?
By the way, I live in what you refer to as that "Dreaded North O", and I don't even pull the keys out of my pickup at night. Maybe your blanket assessment is inaccurate.
Or maybe you're just making all this up in the first place.

Oh, I assure you it is not made up, my auto insurance company wishes it was. As for why I was out at that time of night, I am a responsible man 38 years old driving an intoxicated friend to his house after a night out with friends. Why I was out is not the issue, the point is the violence, especially gun violence, is predominantly north omaha.

So you moved out a safe area that you lived in for 12 years, because of one (admittedly bad) act? And you fixed that problem by moving to a city that is probably less safe overall than Benson?
Seems like a knee jerk move. You probably should have just stayed in Benson.

Actually, I'm curious why we never heard anything about this in the news or on a police report.

anyone else find this story to be unusually vague?
Omaha.com - The Omaha World-Herald: Metro/Region - Man kicks in woman’s door
An Omaha woman woke up to find a man she didn’t know in her apartment about 3:15 a.m. Saturday, according to a police report.
A large man, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall had kicked in her front door, the report says. He came into the woman’s room with a gun and forced her to give him her money.
He also took a Dell laptop, a computer charger, a debit/credit card and a Samsung cell phone.
He left through the same door, the report said.
Police had not yet found him.

Good to see you back here! Looks like the way things are going we might both end up in a 2011 recruit class afterall.

Interesting. A large man - about 5'7".
Yeah, I'm with you. I think there's more to the story. Extremely selective in what was stolen - and everything stolen is easily traceable and/or stoppable.

I'm always around, I just only pipe in when I have something relevant to say...
