I don't know how you can be single and not find things too do. Hell I'm single AND gay and I manage to be pleasantly amused. I've been other places to so I know there are certain things we don't have but overall I keep very busy socially.

mr tony.....I am dying. If you know people from outside of Omaha..that have visited there before AND HAVE GONE TO THE ZOO....do yourself a big favor..and don't suggest going to the zoo the next time they come in town. I love the zoo....think its world class......but its all anybody living in Omaha will tell you when you ask "what to do?"

You are correct...its a great getaway from a big city..relaxing...safe..with some things to do.

Hi,
You can boat on the Missouri, but I would be cautious, only because of tree branches, etc. The Omaha area is not known for its lakes....but you can find several nice ones within a 1-3 hour drive.

Vacationing: Denver is 8 hours, Kansas City is 3 hours. Chicago is 8 hours. Omaha is a Southwest hub, so you can frequently find cheap flights to other hubs (i.e. St. Louis, Chicago).

Schools: We have Catholic friends who send their kids to public schools because the public schools are so good: those 2 districts are Millard and Elkhorn. These are suburbs, with houses in the price range you want. The Dundee and Elmwood Park area (near UNO, 50th and Dodge Street area) are beautiful areas with older, more grand houses. The school district in that area is OPS (omaha public schools). This area has a wide range of income, and some ethnic diversity. For high school boys, Creighton Prep is one of the best high schools around. It is Catholic, although non-Catholics can apply and go there as well.

Restaurants: People have said that Omaha has some of the best restaurants.

Qwest Center: This is a great, relatively new, convention center and arena that brings some great acts to town.

I have spent a great deal of time in Omaha as I have a lot of extended family there. (DH is from Omaha.) I have enjoyed the museums, the zoo, the parks, the 4th of July fireworks at Rosenblatt and many other things, but I would not say Omaha has a lot of outstanding restaurants. It is true that people, at least in my extended family, like to eat out a lot, but much of it seems to go on at places like Applebee's, Chilis, Perkins, etc. I just asked DH his opinion of good Omaha restaurants and he said, "you have to go looking for them".
Just our opinion, of course.

Exactly, you have to look for them and ask locals. Omaha's best restaurants are the ones which have been around for years and years and aren't always on the main roads. They aren't cheap but I've been to many states and these are amoung the best.
