Well, that probably was Lincoln's loss, however, at Lincoln agreed, it would have been interesting to see if the cities would have linked together just like Minneapolis/ST. Paul did, or Dallas and Ft. Worth.
Yes Eppley's location is ideal for quick in and out's, but a regional metroplex can do wonders as it has done in DFW and MSP. Both of these successful MSA's had foresight into the future. Minneapolis was clearly the main cultural center of the two cities, so was Dallas. In this case, OMaha would be. IT's too bad Omaha with Lincoln doesnt have the population base to support two airports.
B/c Omaha's Eppley field is roughly the same size as Dallas Love Field. A regional airport could work if there is a population base to support it. But then again, you can also look at the fact that Omaha's Eppley Airfield has captured 60% of the Sioux City, IA market, and also has captured a slice of Sioux Falls.
There is a small amt. of draw from the KC Metro area, though very minimal. HOwever, Omaha does draw from smaller towns like Norfolk, NE, etc.
But at the end of the day, the numbers wouldnt add up, and the distance b/t Omaha and Lincoln is farther than Minneapolis to St. Paul, Dallas to Ft. Worth.
But kudos to Omaha for taking what is a relatively stagnant midwestern region in terms of growth and moving forward. They have even taken large companies away from areas like St. Louis (ie Union Pacific), and have attracted new ones.
