If I were a married white person in my 30s/40s with young children, I would totally buy a house in Lincoln or Omaha. Not a bad choice for the young graduate student looking to avoid massive loans, either.
Why would you have to be white?

Ya, that "white" comment is a little beyond me.

As someone who was recently (4 months ago) "forced" into moving to Nebraska for my job I was very hesitant but I was coming from Wisconsin and Omaha sounded a HELLUVA lot better then some other places...and once I got here...my perception changed greatly...this is a great city...hell I haven't met many people here and rarely have I gone out...but its still a great city for so many different things and since you aren't from too far away most everything will be the same...apart from not having lakes and rivers EVERYWHERE and a huge amount of alcoholics...this place is almost exactly like wisconsin...but don't let that scare you I'm 22 almost 23 and basically everything that you said you are in terms of personal life...I wouldn't be worried about moving here...and finding a place to live especially cheap is not going to be hard...I'm paying 660 a month and they are VERY nice apartments with a good housing agency...I'd come out and maybe do a bit of "job searching" and apartment searching and you will quickly like this place!
