I don't really drive on country roads in the winter, so I don't know how my car would handle hills of snow, but I've managed in all other situations without slick ice. But yeah, if it's not a hassle or large expense to get AWD, I would. Tire chains are obnoxious and buying studded tires is just too expensive.

Anyway, your employer and the schools will probably cancel work/school when it gets too terribly icey, so I wouldn't worry about it for now.
You're right! When it's glaze ice, all bets are off. It's just straight up bad news, no matter what you're driving!

Just make sure you are driving a car that you feel comfortable in - not too big and certainly not too small.
The worst snow mistake I ever see is when people think that can drive they way the usually do (speed, ram through a yellow/red light, tailgate) in the snow. I mean, there is no reason to drive five mph, but common sense does go along way.

(now having said that, I'll probably get into an accident this winter!)
