Media folks get bored. Hence this becomes news.

If this had happened at Omaha North High School, they'd STILL have every media van and reporter there. And they'd be acting like it was a daily occurrence.

I don't think it's all that bad. I live in Millard and opted my kids out of the school district into OPS 5 years ago. Stories like this were a small factor in my decision. Millard spokesperson Kurt Loftquist has publicly denied there were gangs at any Millard school. Zero, zilch, nada. This was after the shooting of a Millard West student who was identified by OPD as having gang ties. A member of the OPD gang unit stated on TV that Mr Loftquist's statement was one of the most ridiculous things he had heard, and that there were gangs and/or gang members in every school district in the Omaha metro area. Both of my children attend school in North Omaha now because of their schools magnet speciality. OPS has some of the highest rated magnet schools in the country. I drive 165 miles every week to & from schools. The only disturbance with a students behavior at my son's school made the news for about a minute & then it was done with.

This comment isn't about the fact that there are problems in North Omaha, there are. Still, I feel the North O schools are safer for my kids because they're on top of things that can happen at any school. Millard, imo, acts like once you cross 120th you're coming into the land of rainbows & butterflies!

(The main reason I opted out was the whole, 'one city - one school district', fiasco. Too many MPS parents, imo, lost their minds , while having not a clue as to what the whole thing was about! )

so true.

especially the Omaha World Herald which loves picking on Omaha North

if it happens in Millard's 3 high schools or at Omaha Benson High or Omaha South High or Omaha Central High (the story is downplayed and even in some cases, never reported on unless for like a small blurb in the OWH)

but if it's Omaha North , it has to be talked about for days and weeks

I BTW am a proud Omaha North high 1998 grad.

I have a brother-in-law who teaches at Papio-LaVista South. Almost exactly a month ago they had a MAJOR drug bust there - and I do mean major. They even had one mom get arrested for charging the school in her SUV. I mean, this was BIG!

Was it mentioned in the World Herald, or any of the network news stations? Nope.

Why not? Prejudice and money.

i never heard about that.

I would bet if it was at Omaha North and not Papio-South ,

it would have been mentioned til at least Christmas day in the media

I wouldnt be surprised. some schools here have money to downplay or cover things up. or friends in the media

some alumni reps for local area high school alumni associations work as columnists or reporters at local tv stations or the OWH

the OWH high school sports reporter Stu Pospisil is the president of the Omaha Benson High School alumni association

and I would bet there are alumni reps for other high schools

who are so-called reporters or journalists at local tv stations or the Omaha World Herald

look, the media is to a extent a joke in Omaha

Omaha TV News

is a friend's website that brings up the jokes that calls itself the local paper and local tv newscasts. it documents some of the crap our media is doing as journalism
