With a few small exceptions, all of Omaha is safe.

Why don’t you tell us where you (and your significant other, if you have one) will be working, and if you are looking to buy a house or rent an apartment? That would help us make some more tailored recommendations.

McBain II is right, almost all of Omaha is safe. Stay out of the area east of 24th Street and north of Cuming; that’s the bad part of town. Otherwise it is a question of finding a place you like that’s an easy commute to work, and whether you prefer an urban or suburban vibe.

That is good, but surprising to hear, I have heard horror stories about crime and murders so was a little concerned. I will be working in Omaha and I am looking to rent an apartment for myself. I am a single w. As a nature lover, I love to be able to take a walk out at night and feel safe. I am pretty open to urban or suburban. Does anyone have any pointers about a nice apartment or townhouse to rent? I am not looking to spend over 700/800. I am potentially interested in Thomasville and Caraville apartments.

Let me say- yes, Omaha overall is a safe city..as are probably most major American cites relative to their population.. But I think it’s safety is a tad understated here. Yes, the north side of Omaha, which encompasses a pretty large area, has some dangerous and sketchy areas.. So are areas south of the downtown core stretching to about 42nd street to the east and again south.. Some seedy and unsavory areas there just as well. I’ve lived in parts of these areas so I can speak to them. But crime happens everywhere in Omaha and the metropolitan area.

Omaha is no different than most of its peer cities in the 1 million plus metro population range. I’d definitely visit and get a better lay of the land before you decide where you want to rent. Give yourself a visual aid if it’s possible.

Welcome to Omaha and good luck on your move here.

I agree with the other responses- Omaha is generally safe. Tons of apartment options. I would visit and apartment hunt in person . Parts of the city feel very different from others. Not in a bad way. For instance where I live in Centeral O is a very different vibe from say the Elkhorn area for example.

I have several apartments in mind and was thinking about The Atlas Apartments located at 2929 California St. It is right next to cuming st. Any thoughts on the surrounding area or general location? Demographics? I’m trying to avoid twenty something younger crowd.

That's close to the Creighton University campus, so if you're there you're going to be dealing with a younger crowd for sure. (Not necessarily in the building itself, but in the neighborhood in general.) FYI, this used to be Creighton University Medical School's main hospital, but it was closed a few years back and converted into an apartment complex. From what I've heard, the conversion was done very well and the new apartment complex is safe and full of nice amenities.

Midtown's nice (and I think a bit quieter than the downtown Old Market area, but still with an urban feel). There are a lot of small shops, restaurants, and a movie theater there, and (in a normal year) Jazz on the Green is held there on summer weekends.
