McGregor Eyes Opportunities for OPS Students to Bloom

by Julia Hebenstreit

For the past 14 years Mona McGregor has served on the Omaha Public School (OPS) Board of Education representing the midtown area. She understands the value of a strong school system and strives to maintain a positive, innovative environment among OPS schools where students feel comfortable learning.

McGregor is enthusiastic about the vast opportunities OPS offers including Educare, a program that allows teachers to impact students before kindergarten. McGregor said, “If you can catch these students early on, you can set them up for success down the road.”

McGregor also believes that OPS provides a unique experience for students by offering magnet schools.

These facilities allow students to attend a school that specializes in a selected curriculum – math, science, communications, language, music, art, and technology are among the opportunities OPS offers in the area.

OPS was recently approved for the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. McGregor said that students will begin this challenging program at Lewis and Clark Middle School, and continue at Central High School.

According to the IB website the program aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Now for the first time, Omaha Public School students will have the opportunity to participate.

When asked about the impending learning community for local school districts and whether she worried about losing students in the area, McGregor referred to an old quote, “Bloom where you are planted.”

She said that the school district will provide enough information that parents can make a good decision about the right environment for their students to succeed.

“If the learning community happens, we will be making history. The opportunity will exist for all students to attend the school that best fits them. Where they can bloom,” McGregor added.
