MAT bus catches fire
By Andrew J. Nelson
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

A 1996 Metro Area Transit bus caught fire this evening in Omaha.

Firefighters put out the fire at 19th and Dodge Streets within an hour of the 6:22 p.m. call.

No one was injured in the blaze. MAT officials said it appeared nobody other than the driver was on-board when the bus caught fire near its right rear wheel well.

The first thing I noticed - when reading that article - is that nobody but the driver was on the bus.

Well duh... There's hardly EVER anybody but the driver on those MAT buses!

that isnt completly accurate omaha rocks

go on the 2 or 4 bus routes and a lot of people are on them.

I use the 2 or 4 buses almost on a weekly basis. and they have folks on them all the time.

anyday of the week you take the 2 or 4 routes you will see people on them.

some routes hardly have anyone on them, like the 1 or the 10 or the 45 in council bluffs among others

but plenty of folks are always on the 2 or 4 routes. same with the 18

several reasons most people dont use MAT buses IMO:

1. the buses arent as good as they could be. this 1996 bus that was likely used on this route is a example of this.

2. mat bus hardly advertises. ads on tv getting people to take the bus wouldnt hurt.

(also number 1 would help with number 2 reason if MAT really cared about having a good bus system in town)

3. the mat bus system dont serve the whole area really

seriously. have you seen the sunday routes for instance.

the 55 and 5 and 17 dont run on sundays.

the 13 is a joke on sundays cause it is a 32/40/13 route mashed into one.

the buses arent ever allowed anyday of the week

to go west of 120th street

or south of harrison street unless they are express routes.

(see) http://metroareatransit.com/html/bus_system_3.html (broken link)

4. Curt Simon who runs the MAT bus system is a idiot and too unqualified for his job. he needs to go.

^ I know they're not all empty, but most of them lumber relentlessly through the city with very few people on them.

Our house is on a bus route. They come and go from both directions, from early in the morning until late at night. Probably at least 4 per hour. Never once have I seen more than 3 people on any of the buses.

I don't know what the answer is, because that's not my line of work. But I sure as heck know that Omaha's MAT system is abysmal.

The reason the bus had no one on it was because it happened around 7PM. That bus was done for the day and was headed north back to the garage.(I work for MAT). 2, 4-14, 7, 11, 15-55 are our city's most used bus lines.

I have a serious question...

What's keeping MAT from buying some smaller, more efficient, cheaper buses?

I mean let's admit it, very few of any of their buses ever have more than just a small smattering of people riding. Ever.

So why have these giant, 50 passenger barges lumbering along with 2-10 people on them?

Your thoughts? What, if anything, am I missing here?

the 13 and 18 and 30 and 8 are used a lot also.

I dont see the 10 or 1 used much. same with the infamous route 34.

I think mat bus needs to advertise it's routes.

I wonder how many floral carbon-bon bons were put in the air that night. Al Gore would be mad.
