Omaha.com - The Omaha World-Herald: Metro/Region - Help Wanted: Council member

The Omaha City Council has begun taking applications to fill the northwest Omaha seat held by Chuck Sigerson, who resigned last week because of health problems.

To qualify, applicants must 18 years of age and residents of council District 7 for a minimum of six months. They also must be a registered voter.

Here's a timeline for the application process:

-- By 3 p.m. March 10: Candidates must submit a letter, resume and a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters from District 7. Those materials should be submitted to City Clerk Buster Brown, City-County Building, 1819 Farnam St., LC-1, Omaha NE 68183.

-- March 23: Council President Garry Gernandt will announce finalists for the seat.

-- April 6: Finalists will be interviewed at a special City Council meeting in the Legislative Chambers at the City-County Building.

-- April 13 : Council members will name a Siegerson's successor. The winning candidate must receive four council votes.

The new council member will be sworn in on April 20. Sigerson has not attended a meeting since he suffered a stroke and heart attack last August.

Well maybe not just yet. We seem to be having budgetary problems right now. The last thing we need is to start spending our money on frivolous items such as a St. Louis Gateway Arch sized stainless steel rainbow, 300' statues of unicorns, and sassy cat fights in city council meetings.

If they have time to approve liquor licenses for businesses, they have time to approve gay friendly legislation!
