Question Auburn area?

Not sure if I should post this here or not...

Hubby has a possibility of a job in the SW part of Auburn. Where do most people live who work in Auburn? We have two kids ages 10 and 12, gifted and talented...how about schools?

I don't mind the weather at all and I really don't mind a commute of say around 40-45min...

We don't have to live in Auburn that's just where the job is.

Thanks!

I am very familiar with Auburn and would NOT at all recommend it. Especially if you have kids that age. I have close family down there so I'm there often.

There is a huge drug problem in the town so watch who your kids hang around. I have young cousins who are and have been on drugs to the point where they can't get a job cleaning toilets at the ripe old age of 20.

If the job is in Auburn and you don't mind the commute, live in Nebraska City.

I think for a small town Nebraska City is the best one in Nebraska. It's big enough where it has a littile bit more restaurants and shopping. It's also close to Omaha which is a big plus. The town has many nice areas and some older, well kept areas that you don't see in other small Nebraska towns.

Auburn does not have a drug problem! There are probably some drugs in the town...just like any other town, but to paint it as some drug infested town is not accurate. The problem with a few of the small towns is that 3 or 4 kids can literally paint the entirely wrong impression of the town. You may have a small group of trouble making people, but the vast majority of those in Auburn are just normal run of the mill small town people. Ultimately, you'll need to go visit these places and not take the advice of people who live in Omaha and Lincoln concerning small Nebraska towns. That said, you shouldn't take my word for it either. I probably defend small town Nebraska sometimes for nostalgic reasons...I don't know, but in the end people who live in the city don't really paint the smaller towns accurately. Part of it is their criteria for a "good city" are based on the things that brought them to the big city to begin with. And many of the small towns, almost by definition, can not satisfy these requirements. At any rate, Auburn isn't bad, but neither is Nebraska City. DTO does bring up a good point with Nebraska City. It may be easier for you to adjust there. But I wouldn't be afraid of a "drug problem" in Auburn.

It's not just the kids in Auburn. I know many adults who are hooked on drugs down there too. It's a small dumpy dying town. My cousin is in law enforecement down there and he would say other wise about the drug problem.

Look I live in the area of Auburn. I am retired from law enforcement. I have worked closely with both the Auburn Police and Sheriff's Departments. Just like mattpoulsen says go there and see for yourself. For me Auburn is a very nice town to bring up kids. You as a parent have to take the lead in how you bring up your kids. Keep in mind that bad habits in children are not genetic they are taught by the parents and adults that influence them as they are growing up. Auburn has a very good school system and they have lots of these for the youth to do as well. They have a swimming pool, a community center, a park where the kids can go fishing. If you like shopping you will find many stores there to go to. You have the old downtown that is by the court house and you have the new district that is along the two US Highways that go through the town. As for DTO Luv sorry that you take such a low view of Auburn. As for Nebraska City over Auburn, guess if you like a large, possible illegal alien population then go to Nebraska City. I have stopped many from Nebraska City who turned out to be illegal, yet INS would not come and get them. I never stopped anyone from Auburn who could not speak, read and write the English language. Also there are more drugs in Nebraska City than will ever be in Auburn.

I live in Auburn and I have children about your age. I'll agree that drugs are in every town, including Nebraska City and I'm sure they are just as prevelant there as they are in our smaller town. I would look at any town you are interested in. If your kids are into any sports at their age, I'd suggest any other town. Auburn has it's "group" to chose from and you hope your child, even at the young age of 10, can find a way to that group, or they are likely to see little playing time-or get little coaching help. Come for a visit and see for yourself. I wish I didn't own the amount of property here that I do. And I can't say much for our sheriff's department or police force. But Nebraska City is not the great little community that you are hearing about either. Live in a small little community or in the country and if you ever have a problem with a theft or break in on your property, call the State Patrol to handle it.

Everyone has problems with any law enforcement agency. It could come from getting arrested for something you did. It could be from getting that speeding ticket from a local police officer in the town that you live in. Whatever the case is the Police and Sheriff Departments can only do what the law says that they can. Not all crimes get solved, not all court cases end up in court like we would like them to end up. When I was a law enforcement officer I heard it all the time about what we were not doing right, yet these same individuals would never take the time to come to court to see what was going on in the court. It was hard to even get the victim at times to show up in court. SO WHEN THE JUDGE SEES THIS WHY SHOULD HE CARE ON WHAT KIND OF PUNISHMENT HE GIVES OUT. Yet it is individuals like you who have no clue what being a police officer is like. As a police officer I never told a plumber, carpenter, auto mechanic, teacher, computer experet how to do their jobs as I felt that they were better trained to do the job themselves. Guess by you watching CSI, Law & Order, Boston Legal, and other crime television shows you become a expert in law enforcement. Sure wish that was true then I would not have had to spend all that time, thousands of hours, sitting in a classroom learning how to do it the legal and correct way, I could have just watched television instead.

You can call the Nebraska State Patrol for those little crimes, but they will just ask you if you have contacted your local police of sheriff departments. If you tell them yes they will check to see if you did and if they find out that you failed to tell them the truth your story will be looked as not being truthful either. The Nebraska State Patrol has only about 500 active officers and well of 75% of these are what is called road troopers who write speeding tickets, investigate traffic accidents, and deal with trucks at the scales for a living. Very few are criminal investigators and these investigators are busy with much more serious crimes, like murder, and come in to help the local agencies with these crimes with assets that these smaller agencies can not afford to buy for themselves.

One thing that you can do to help clean up your small towns is get involved. Report all illegal incidents to your local police and sheriff departments. Become an active member in a Community Policng Program that tells the criminal elements that they kind of activities are not welcome in your town. Be willing to testify in court on what you saw or heard. Go to court a few times to just sit and listen to what is going on. If you don't agree with something then exercise your right, but not in the court as you could end up in jail, by asking the Judge, in a respectful manner, why he did what he did in the case. Do it in a way that is asking questions for the purpose of learning what he does and why. Do not do it in a insulting way. They will try to explain it to you after all they work for you, you are their employer.

I'm not in trouble with the law. But we did have a break in on our property. I talked the State Patrol who stated they could have handled if I hadn't already called my local sheriff's department. I'll admitt I don't understand how all aspects of every business is run. But our local sheriff's department look like "keystone cops" at times. It's an embarassment to the community.
