I mentioned Iraq to show just how much we do indeed accept generalizations on a daily basis and to point out how NO ONE seems to mind generalizing certain topics yet feel offended when generalizing others.
For example, they say I can't lump a whole county of hundreds of thousands of OC inhabitants together and call them superficial, materialistic and shallow. Yet everyone blindly accepts lumping a whole nation of people (the Iraqis) together and calling them 'insurgents' or 'terrorists' when all they're really doing is exercising their God-given right to blow illegal foreign invaders within their country (that means us) to pieces.
We generalize about other countries reasons for wanting WMD's (which BTW are always the WRONG reasons; they want to kill us, they want to start a war, they want to provoke us) and yet WE already have the greatest worldwide arsenal of WMD's AND we're the only ones who've actually used them against human beings in both Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
Lemme 'generalize' a little more here; has it ever ocurred to anyone that maybe the other countries want their own WMD's to protect themselves against us?.
We generalize and call ourselves a just nation, standing up for the weak & disenfranchised. Then we turn around and invade defenseless little countries like Grenada and Panama.
We generalize and call ourselves defenders of freedom and yet we're currently running a world-wide system of clandestine jails & torture centers.
We generalize and say we want 'each country to have the government they freely elect' and then spend trillions of dollars and thousands of lives uselessly trying to bomb & invade countries like Vietnam, North Korea and Cuba (among others) into democracy. If a country (such as Chile) decides they want to have a Socialist government, we send the CIA to whack their new president (Allende).
And yet when I refer to a little Southern Cali county as an obvious backwater ****hole of uncultured, shallow materialism I get criticized for generalizing.
Pleeze.

People say you can't generalize a region, but in many cases, generalizing a region is completely accurate. The geographic area in which a person lives has a certain culture, and the majority of the inhabitants of that region usually conform knowingly, or unknowingly to the culture, it's a powerful force on a persons personality, especially that young people. This is obvious and is learned early on in Sociology and Anthropology classes.
In Orange County, there is a strong culture of conservative, ultra right-wing, wealthy white people. This is a fact, and most OC residents like to keep OC this way. The recent history of the OC has been built by these kinds of people and it is definantly reflected in the overall culture. It has become ultra-individualistic, snobby, materialistic, greedy, pompus and plastic.
Money truely is more important than family or religion to many in the OC. Although they will never admit this of course, their lifestyle says it loud and clear.
Just like when all the money is taken out of an area, it will become "ghetto" and begin to get that culture. When you have too much money, mixed with idealogies that everyone in the region shares. It WILL create a very distinct culture in that area.
In the OC, there is such a distinct culture, entirely based on money and power. You all created it to be that way. It's OBVIOUS to everyone that that's how it is there. You all seem to like it that way. So why don't you all just ADMIT that this is the world you're living in?
I think the bottom line is this. YES OC has a greedy, impersonal, rich, ultra right-wing culture. YES, people in OC are rude, ultra-individualistic, pompus and competetive. And YES, if you are not rich, white and willing to conform to the communities strict standards, you will be disrespected. That's just how it is there.
Some people like it that way. Personally I think that culture is one of the fakest, most uptight and limiting ways of living. But regardless of your opinion about it, it IS like that there, so be ready for that if you move there.
