I apologize if this has already been posted but theres a lot on this forum..
I am currently living in NY and relocating to Southern California in November, because my family now lives there. I will be working from home so there's no specific area I need to be in. However, I would like to live in a safe and nice area that would cost me no more than $1200 (ideally) for a 1 BR apartment.

I've been advised of a few areas from my sister-in-law but there are too many places to choose from. I need to narrow it down to a specific town right now if possible.

I know its a pretty open ended question but any info would be great. I am going out there next week for vacation and want to start looking..

Thanks in advance!

Where is your family living? Seems like a logical starting point or point of reference.

Hi -

Not sure which part your family is in, or how close you would like to be to them...we recently relocated to Capistrano Beach(City of Dana Point) from Milwaukee, WI. This is a really nice area. We are within walking distance to the beach(it's just under a mile so a nice walk!). Capo Beach is a little niche nestled between San Clemente and Dana Point. People here seem pretty nice and laid back. It's not a "city" if you're looking for something more like LA. We are 1 hour south of LA and 1 hour north of San Diego.

There are a lot of cities and lifestyles that vary by geography and demographics in southern California. If possible come out and spend a day in a few representative communities. Census data at the ZIP code level should allow you to pick a reasonable varity of living situations.

At $1200 / month you probably will not get much near more popular sites but that is still adequate to have plenty of choice in lesser known but equally enjoyable cities.
