Default Cheap rentals outside the city?

It seems that all I see on these forums are apartments, condos, and the like inside the city... I am interested in renting someplace inexpensive outside the city. A secluded mobile in the desert an hour from town would interest me... something less expensive than the over-priced apts in the city and with a little more open spaces and privacy. Anyone know of anywhere one could look online to find places like that? Preferably an hour or less from San Diego or Los Angeles.

Probably more than an hour from L.A. but somewhere around Palmdale or Lancaster might work. However you can figure that anywhere within an hour during rush hour (30 miles?) is going to be expensive.
