Hi
I'm currently residing in the UK and had a brace fitted about 4 months ago to straighten out my teeth. I've since decided to move across the pond to Aliso Viejo and will be arriving in about 3 weeks. I've told my dentist here in the UK about my impending move, and thought it would just be a case of him writing me a referral letter, and then going forward I would have my brace adjusted by a new dentist in Orange County. However, my dentist has kicked up a fuss saying that they do things "differently" in the US and I will probably have to pay around $20k for a brand new treatment! He has somewhat reluctantly agreed to write a referral letter, but wants me to go to a colleague of his in San Diego, which seems a little odd and a long way to drive from Aliso Viejo
So sorry for the long story, but my question is: Is it really that difficult for a US dentist to carry on my brace adjustments? Can anyone recommend a dentist that I could contact (preferably close to Aliso Viejo)? And does anyone else have any similar experience of moving between dentists?

I would talk to a couple other orthodontists in the UK and contact a couple in Aliso Viejo too. See if this makes sense. It might. Or, it could be a line of BS.

I find it hard to believe the suggestion that there is not a single competent and reasonably priced orthodontist in all of Orange County. It sounds like your dentist is trying to generate business for his San Diego friend.
My suggestion is to start a new thread, specifically asking for a referral to an Orange County orthodontist who is located close to AV.

When we moved from Canada to Mission Viejo my son had braces. He had had them for about 1 1/2 years. We found a wonderful orthodontist here and he just continued the treatment and my son had his braces removed 6 months later. Since we had pre-paid our orthodontist in Canada he refunded about $2,000. (which was more than we were expecting to get) and the orthodontist here charged us $1,500. for the balance of his treatments
His name is Dr. Bryan on Crown Valley Parkway in Mission Viejo. I can get you more information if you are interested.

My braces were installed in Canada. I later moved to So Calif, found a new doctor and continued on as if I had moved from the next county...
