The main problem in Stanton is gangs, as well as its historically disadvantaged location right along Beach Blvd, where the effects of its being the "main drag" of the city have somewhat of a dragging effect on people's view of it (problems with prostitution, drug dealing, etc.) Live closer to the border with Cypress or on the southern end. Seems the shopping in the areas has helped to boost the housing and neighborhood quality.

But you can do better than Stanton even on a modest salary.

Just my two cents.
Heh, I didn't mean to pick on Stanton, but it was just a baseline city that I picked after an Deputy Sheriff told me it was probably among the crappiest places to live in the county. But I understand the OC Sheriff's dept. typically patrols the nicer areas of South OC so maybe his perspective was skewed.

I was fortunate to be hired for a public sector job in central Orange County and will be moving to OC soon from elsewhere in CA.

Where in OC will you be working? It’s probably best to share an apartment with a roommate in that city; provided it’s not Irvine or Newport Beach.

Civic center area

How about Orange, Tustin, or maybe some of the nicer areas of Santa Ana.
Those are all really close

I moved here about a month ago (5 weeks) and I don't find it profoundly expensive. Then again I moved from NYC. But still, I'm on a very tight budget temporarily in Laguna Beach of all places and I love it. I just take care of practical errands elsewhere, and for neighborhood dining I utilize Happy Hour. Even Laguna has cheap options, much like New York did, but as far as quality of life goes, definitely cool with it.

I lived in NYC (Manhattan) for a number of years, and I have to agree that in comparison, Orange County looks cheap; including food, clothing, utilities, car insurance and housing prices.
That said, NYC prices are insane, and compared to other places in the US, OC is expensive and can take a bite out of someone’s budget.
About the dining during Happy Hour thingy, I guess right now you are not too much into nutrition?

I don't know about those numbers...transportation costs have got to be higher for a one-income family than for a single person even if your kids take the school bus to and from school. And taxes will be higher if you have to rent instead of being able to take the mortgage interest deduction. Monthly housing costs would probably be higher for those who rent as well, without being able to put a down payment against their mortgage. Utility costs might be a bit higher if there's someone at home more often.

All I know is that I wouldn't want to raise a traditional two-parent family on that income alone
