I'm in a similar boat. I'm a software engineer, looking to relocate to OC from Seattle. The problem with OC is a lot of the software/IT work is in small/mid-cap companies, so not only is competition high, but pay is lower than Seattle. Sure Google is there, as is Oracle, A2Z (Amazon Subsidiary), and Microsoft, but they are smaller satellite offices with a few hundred employees at best. The larger software employers are the aerospace companies in HB/SB area, which generally requires a security clearance. The rest of the work is more in the ASIC/IC domain and there's a good representation in OC. In a nutshell, it’s much weaker IT/Software job market than Seattle and orders of magnitude weaker than Silicon Valley. You'll most likely be accepting 5-10% less in salary (unless you blow their socks off), and also paying 10% more in taxes off the bat. Just something to consider. It's all about WTMWB, and OC is a highly desirable location.

Hope this helps answers your question. Browse around the job listings on Indeed/Monster and you’ll get an idea of what’s there.
