Default Who's Hiring?

My wife and I just moved from Northern California to Yorba Linda a couple of weeks ago. We are ultimately expecting to live in the Garden Grove area, so we've been looking for jobs within about 20 miles of that location. We have been putting in applications like crazy (for about a month), and so far haven't even received a phone call. I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, and have worked for about 3-4 years in banking as a Teller and as a Personal Banker, as well as a few jobs here and there in retail over the years. My wife has an Associate's degree and experience in both a call center and as an Administrative Assistant.

Obviously we've focused our efforts in the areas in which we have the most experience, but it hasn't panned out so far. We are willing to do other types of work, just as long as the pay isn't too low. I would say that $12 per hour is the lowest wage either of us could accept, but given the cost of living down here, and our experience, that doesn't seem like too high a requirement. I can do part-time work (or full-time if it is night/graveyard shift) since I'm in school. My wife is available for full-time work and her schedule is wide open.

I have looked for jobs online, and even gone in person to certain employers to inquire. So far, it's all been to no avail. Since we are new to the area, networking is difficult to do, but I figured that other users on this site might have some insight into companies in the area that are hiring right now. At this point, I am open to any suggestion at all. Thanks in advance for the help!

Really bad time to be looking for work. Businesses are down sizing.

I thought the best idea was to find a job...then move?????? Very bad job market...the more you think you want or deserve..likely the more disappointed you will be...

your experience doesn't count for that much in this market..

You might want to consider moving to somewhere like Northern Virginia where it's not that difficult finding a job, probably for a much higher salary than what you said you'd settle for. We have pretty low unemployment here. Atlanta or Dallas would also likely be better locales for you than CA. It's really a different world here than there.

You might want to check in the travel and tourism industry for call center employment. Try TravCorp in Anaheim, Disney, Knotts, major hotel chains etc as they all seem to hire throughout the year. You probably already know this but modifing your resume to high light travel and customer service will only help you stand out. Good Luck!

An Office Depot in Santa Ana has a "now hiring" sign in the window. How's your Spanish?

I agree with this...in an ideal world. Long story short, we were on a mission trip overseas that was cut short because my wife broke her ankle and knee. We didn't really expect to be looking for a job right now, but we just have to play the hand we're given.

I wish this was an option, but I'm going to be attending CSU Long Beach in the Fall which ties us down to this area for the time being. Then again, there are worse placed to be tied down to...

This is a great suggestion...I'll look into TravCorp and the hotels for sure. I already looked at Disney and they are hiring for positions that really wont pay me enough. I am not sure what Knotts salaries are like, but I would assume it's similar to Disney; if anyone knows from experience, I would love to hear.

Avoid Disney as an employer. They don't call it "Mouse-Schwitz" for nothing. Very Low Pay.

My wife works at Knott's and has the next 2 months off. They will accept applications but not hiring.
Knott's earn 75% of their income during Halloween haunt. Between mid- Sept to Halloween. They do their hiring in August.

She has friends at Dizzyland and they are not hiring there either.

Try Aliso Viejo if you cant' find anything closer to Garden Grove. It's about 24 miles away. PetSmart in Aliso Viejo is always hiring, but I don't know how much they pay. Many of their employees are college students who come and go depending upon their class schedule. Others seem to be freelancers who just want to use the part-time job to supplement their income from other sources. I like their PetsHotel and, even more importantly, so does my dog and she attends Day Camp there 3-4 times a week.

Also, try the Renaissance ClubSport hotel and spa in Aliso Viejo. Currently, they have openings for the following:Banquet Server, Esthetician, Fitness Attendant, Hotel Sales Manager (SMERF), Income Auditor, Massage Therapist, Nail Technician and Steward.
Renaissance ClubSport Aliso Viejo | Sports, Fitness, Hotel & Spa | Orange County, CA

I would recommend concentrating your search in South County, even if it means a longer commute, because you are likely to find much less competition for jobs that are paying at the $12/hr level.

Good Luck
