Check crime stats on Google or this website.

The general public perception is that Cypress is FAR safer than Stanton.

I would say the difference is night and day. I would not spend the day in Stanton, much less the night.
Cypress is nice.

Cypress is nice.
The nicest parts of Stanton are next door to Cypress, and the OP would not be wrong to consider those areas; just not "Crow Village".

There used to be a crime-ridden County area near Crow Village. It was called "the Gaza strip." Unknown if it's still called that.

Cypress is a nice community. Stanton--not so much.

The shopping centers on the east side of Beach Blvd. between Chapman and Orangewood were torn down and replaced with apartments and/or condos. What's this area like now? Has it improved much since the mid 90's?

I was passing through Stanton the other day and stopped for a meal at Al Tannour. Not a fancy place, but the best middle eastern food i've ever eaten. Afterwards, I stopped at a local supermarket, Super King and it seemed decent as well. Nice diversity of people: arabs, latin, and asian.
