Default John Wayne Flight Path

I posted a month or two ago asking about the flight paths of John Wayne Airport.

I can't find the answer that a lovely man gave me. Awesome links, satellite photos, etc.

I'm just trying again.

Don't know about your prior answer. The simple answer is the "normal" approach path is from the northeast, roughly parallel to highway 55. The "normal" departure path heads southwest heading straight out over Newport Back Bay. JWA departures are unique because the airport requires planes to make a steep climb immediately after takeoff in an attempt to gain a lot of elevation before crossing over the middle of Newport Beach and Balboa Island to avoid jet noise. It burns a lot of extra jet fuel in the process.

Just look at any map website like Google Map or Bing Map, and find JWA, and look at the single runway. Just draw a straight line from the runway and that is the arrival or departure flight path.

On days like today with Santa Ana winds blowing from the northeast, the arrival and departure paths are reversed. Planes make an approach from the southwest, and takeoffs towards the northeast.

A but more complicated than that. Planes arriving from the north usually fly over the over the ocean, then cut in roughly over Huntington Beach and fly east until they u turn over the Anaheim/Orange Area. When winds (especially Santa Anas) are blowing arriving flights fly over newport beach and depart over Santa Ana/Orange/Anaheim

I was looking for some maps I designed about 10 years ago for an PSA campaign that clearly show the flight paths for JWA (SNA). If I find them I will post them.
