Atlanta and Charlotte offer many good positions for African-American professionals. Columbus, Ohio was recently ranked the #1 best city in the country for African-Americans by BET. Many Texas and Ohio cities seem like they have good oppurtunity for African-Americans.

I would say don't move to Santa Ana period regardless of color. I am black and closer to your age and live in orange county. I don't think you will encounter much racism. But its here just like everywhere else. Its life.
I would suggest moving out of the state and it has nothing to do with color. Southern California is going down hill fast. Plenty of people are leaving and going to Texas and places south.

First off, I am sorry you have to experience that. I would look into Sacramento and the surrounding cities. They built out so much that they got rocked with this housing market correction. Just think, 30 minutes South of Sacramento is Stockton CA, the foreclosure capital of the US. At one point, 1 in 7-9 homes was foreclosed. With the market correction, you can find brand new homes in the high $200s-500s for a larger home with land. You just have to brave the heat. The Inland Empire is also more diverse, so if you want to stay in SoCal.

Lastly, Las Vegas is an option. Are you in your early 50s or late 50s? My mom's best friend moved from Oakland to a 55+ community in Las Vegas and they love it. They are both lighter skinned like you, and they work and golf all the time in their community. I'd even introduce you if you moved to the same area. They are the sweetest! She helped raise my brother and so he thought be was black as a little boy. So cute!
