I remember when the first McMansion community went in around Newport Beach, Big Canyon, all of us non-McMansion livers thought them gauche and noveau. They didn't fit with our vision of coastal California (basically one-story ranch styles under 3,500 sq.ft.). We considered the folks living there as climbers from somewhere else having no idea that would become the norm for new home construction. It really marked the end of a simpler time down there.
