Because:
A. I was there
B. I remember the lay of the land before all that new stuff was added.

I'm fairly certain you can do the same thing with parts of the SFV.

I like Hollywood and Los Angels. Lake Forest looks way better now than it did when it was just open land. It used to look like foresaken and barren land; even more depressing than Kansas or Minnesota (I would die if I lived there). At least now it looks civilized, although still depressingly suburban.

I like the fact that you are paying local taxes in our communtiy but why don't you move to LA and all the skyscrapers and bright lights and action?

Well you wouldn't have been on the 5 all the way as the stretch a few miles South of Charles pics wasn't completed until the late 60s or maybe 1970.

A. I was there too
B. I was going to guess you read the developer's sign since you have a pretty good memory for that sort of thing.

I believe that the route was still called Interstate 5 at that time but you are right, the freeway was not completed until later.

It's like Route 91. The highway (which is currently La Palma Ave) went from OC to Riverside and was also the only way to get from OC to the mountain towns of Crestline, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, etc, and it was called Route 91 before the freeway was built.

Progress, I guess...

Naw, I knew that was Toledo Way even before I noticed the developer's sign was readable. There are simply too many tells in the land forms. (I had to copy the pic to my HDD and blow it up a few times before my ancient eyes could read it)

The freeway stopped at the OC/SD County line in 1961 or 1962*. From that point on until some place in Oceanside, one had to transition to old Route 101, aka "Slaughter Alley". That stretch of road still exists as the main access road within the State Park.

*Next time you're out here, look at the Cal Trans ID numbers stenciled on the overcrossings in San Clemente. The first two numbers are the year of completion. The Reeve's Ranch cattle overcrossing (now the Vista Hermosa oc) once sported a 58 or 59 ID number. Can't remember which now... lost to the fog of time.
