Be warned that side street traffic is just as bad as the freeways. Worse if there's an accident and everybody and his brother have gotten off the freeway and are taking the side steets.

Robbybee's given you some great advice about getting the lay of the land.

Still a nasty commute in any case.
I think there are several options which would make the commute time <30 Mins

If the OP is working by the court house tustin st would take less time than the 55 fwy and get him there in 30 mins....

If the OP was working by the Airport/SCP the toll road would drop him close enough to take city streets or he could take Imperial to Jamboree to Edinger or something like this....Really not that bad of a commute.

I commute from Yorba linda to Tustin and I use side streets instead of the freeway -- takes me only 20-25 minutes from East Yorba Linda -- using Weir Canyon to Serrano, then take Canon all the way into Tustin -- which is right next to Santa Ana. Like they said above, it all depends from where in Yorba Linda to where in Santa Ana!

Oh, and by the way, I grew up in Tustin in the 60's -- great city to live in! I have now lived in Yorba Linda for 8 years and absolutely LOVE that City as well. Yorba Linda reminds me of Tustin years ago -- large properties, horses, laid back people! Irvine is a little too stuffy for me (I also lived there for 6 years in the 80's!), Costa Mesa is too crowded, too close to Newport Beach and lots more traffic, especially in the summer months! Its all a matter of personal preference, but I would definitely look into Yorba Linda or Tustin.

Tustin Street is a good side street option for this commute. Tustin St runs parallel to the 55 so if one or the other is clogged - you can get on (or off as the case may be) the 55 and continue your trip. If traffic is good on Tustin - you can get from Yorba Linda to Santa Ana in 30-45 mins. Note that this street changes names along this route. In Yorba Linda and Placentia (north of Orangethorpe Av.) it is called Rose Drive. In Anacrime - ahem Anaheim - and Orange it is Tustin St. (from Orangethorpe to 17th Street. The section from 22 Freeway to 17th St. is in Santa Ana. At 17th St. Tustin becomes Grand Avenue.

Y.l. Cna be a tough commute depending on where to where. My secretarty for several years was in Y.L. and our office was right on the 55 in Santa Ana. Later we moved downtown.

Look at Old Town Orange instead. Afordable, quaint, friendly and only a few miutes from most places in Santa Ana. If you are in southern Santa Ana, (i.e. Ariport or SCP area, then you should probably look at Tustin or Santa Ana if Irvine is too expensive.

How important are schools? Can you afford private schools? Would you be willing to drive to a charter school? Apartment or house?
