So how should I call some people on craigslist to rent a room from the OC if I am in seattle do I just call and mail them a check for deposit or something?

Do you mean that you are in Seattle and looking to rent a room in OC (not THE OC. BTW)? If that's the case then you are never gonna be certain what you are getting. Do you know anyone down here who can preview locations for you? I would be hesitant to arrange a rental sight-unseen - for many reasons.

If you are not up to an extended stay, or other hotel, because of the expense, another option is to stay at a youth hostel for a few days while checking-out rooms.
