Just got hired and am relocating quickly! Work is in Garden Grove (right off the 5 / 22 ) Where should I live? I can afford 1br < 1200. I don't want more than a 30 min. commute. Safety is paramount, but I want to live in a very hip, young adult area. I'm a huge foodie (so restaurants are a must) and I like the bar scene. HELP! I have to be up there in less than 3 weeks.

Sounds like you can afford more than $1200.

Cut your restaurant and bar scene expenses by 50% and kick your rent budget up to $1600.

Downtown Fullerton or Orange maybe? Both have colleges nearby. 30 minutes is a pretty small commute radius if you work normal hours.

Yea 30 minutes in OC or anywhere in Socal for that matter limits your options.

In my opinion (others feel free to disagree), the best places for young single people in OC are Newport Beach then Huntington Beach. Fullerton is pretty good too, but it's much more a college and sports/frat bar town. If you aren't affiliated with CSU Fullerton, it may get boring.

Huntington Beach is about 40-50 minutes from Garden Grove in rush hour depending where in each you live. Newport is a bit further.

If you go to google maps and zoom out for a map of OC, in the search too to the right of the multicolored google maps logo, put in the word "bar" then hit enter. It will show you all the bars in the area.

You will see the highest concentration in Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.

Chapman College is in Downtown Orange (similar age range and interests) and there is a pretty wide variety of attractions nearby. GG and Fountain Valley probably won't meet your needs. Seal Beach would be an option but there is a big issue with traffic as they are doing freeway expansion. Still, it might be worth considering. It's a laid-back beach town with lots to see and do.

There is also a new development right near Angel Stadium that is still developing it's personality but there may be some nice opportunities there. It's referred to as the Platinum Triangle.
Platinum Triangle, Anaheim - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I always suggest that new transplants spend a couple weeks in an Extended Stay or other hotel till they get a feel for what's up.

Congrats on the new gig!

Where are you living now?

Huntington Beach is 40-50 Minutes from Garden Grove???? This is definitely not true, it does not take 40-50 minutes to go 6-10 miles on Beach Blvd

She's going to be working near the Orange Crush. Downtown HB to there is a pretty slow drive with traffic.

^^Agreed!^^

It takes 15 to 20 mins just to get to the 405 freeway from the HB Pier area. Another 10 to 15 to get to the 22 fwy. And then you keep going on Beach Blvd to get to GG.

It could easily be a 40 minute drive - especially in the summer.

Haha.. I'd suggest the opposite.. cut the rent to 1000 and use the extra $200 to enjoy yourself!

There are ways to reduce that time a bit. Don't take Beach Blvd. Instead, take Gothard or Newland.
