Hi, I just moved to OC from Iowa and I was wondering if there are any good gyms in Irvine?
I used to be a Gold's gym member and I think they are doing ok but the closest one in Irvine is about 13 miles from where I live.
I also found a lot of bad reviews about 24 hour fitness so I probably don't want to go there either.
So....I guess I don't have a lot of options here, can you guys help me on this?
Thanks a lot

Iron Bodies Gym in Costa Mesa! This is an awesome old school hardcore gym.

24 Hour Fitness is Irvine is a fashion show and meat market. Unless you want to workout and pick up on chicks at the same time 24HR in Irvine is not for you. If you want to workout, check out the eye candy and hit on girls at the same time....you will like it. It just depends on what you want to do. Lots of people go to that gym to stand around and preen hoping to get a date. It is the new option to a nightclub.

I belong to 24HR so I can not comment on any other gyms. Sorry.

Check our one of the rowing clubs in the area.
Newport Aquatic Center and the Long Beach Rowing Association both have Olympic Level gyms that are available to their members. (about $500 a year). Plus you get the benefits of a social and athletic club.

don`t think you can beat 24 h fitness....just too many locations to choose from if you don`t like one just go to a different one...they have hundreds of locations and soo many around Irvine...just my 2 cents.

24hr and LA Fitness have the most locations. Ultimately, it depends on what city you're in. Most middle class and up cities have small neighborhood gyms

Check out Bally's in Tustin. Tons of equipment, plus they seem to have a full time person who fixes things when they break. It is less hard core than Golds but way less of a fashion show than the 24 Hr Fitness that another poster mentioned. It is on El Camino Real.

Well, let me tell you a bit about the gyms around Irvine.

1) Bally's in Tustin. Pretty crappy location in an old strip mall. Don't go.
2) 24HR Fitness on Culver. Very small, poor ventilation, and pretty packed at times.
3) 24HR Fitness Ultra Sport. Horrific parking, old equipment, and very pricey.
4) 24HR Fitness at UCI. Small, clean, and convenient.
5) 24HR Fitness Super Sport at Triangle Square. Brand spanking new. How awesome is that?
6) 24HR Fitness Super Sport at the Marketplace. Also new, clean, spacious, and safe.

I upgraded my membership to Super Sport for an additional $10/month. It is so worth it. On the weekdays, I go to the Super Sport at the Marketplace. On the weekends, I go to the Super Sport at Triangle Square. As for the Super Sport at South Coast and the Spectrum, they were merely renovated so I'm not that impressed. I would only go to a Sport or Active club if I'm running short on time and it's convenient to do so.

Good suggestions here, but I also recommend using yelp.com

Lots of good reviews, on all the gyms in the location you want.

There's a couple gyms in Murrieta that charge by the month with no contract. You can pay for a month or two and quit if you want with no penalty. I think they go for about $15 to $20 per month.

Is there anything like this in Orange County?
