We moved out of OC for reasons completely unrelated to white flight or race. Primarily we wanted to be closer to family and secondarily we wanted to get away from the bad moral atmosphere, egocentrism, materialism and sexuality on steroids; and the non-stop crazy busy-ness and crowding (in short we wanted a more wholesome place to raise our children). However like a bad penny, I keep turning up and living in OC from time to time.

We know five other families who left for the same reasons (although some of them did not include wanting to be near family and actually moved away from their extended family due to the atmosphere). While that is only 30 people out of that 8.9 % it does show that some invalid assumptions are being made.

I'm half white half vietnamese and my husband is white. We're trying to stay in Santa Ana, not leave it. Hard to find a place to buy that works for us in our budget that isn't a major fixer or has 20 offers, though. We'd love to live in Orange, too.

We left Aliso Viejo for Santa Ana. Are we counted in that 3.3%?

We'd probably only leave OC if I lost my job. Both of our families are in Northern California and would like us to live up there if we could. My job is tied down here, my husband is in school so he's tied here 2 more years also. Are we ready to run back north if we're not tied down here? Possibly. Are we running from hispanics or other people in OC? I doubt it.

People leave for all kinds of reasons. Maybe a lot of those people lost their jobs and homes and just left in the last 3-4 years. Once you have no job, OC is not very affordable.

This white guy flighted from OC largely becuase of these reasons also. Behavior too often typied by many white people living there.

We need a term to describe whites fleeing other whites.

Just because you want homes and neighborhoods with character doesn't mean you're fleeing white people. I would absolutely dread moving back to an apartment in Aliso Viejo.

Coldjensens actually has a lot of cool stories about houses and the people who used to live in them in the older areas of OC. I myself am a sucker for historical homes and the stories that go along with them.

While living in Santa Ana, I haven't had anything vandalized or stolen, or witnessed any crimes. It's mostly been quiet but I live in a nice area. When I lived in Aliso, someone peed on my garage door around the time when I was about to move. All my furniture was in the garage so had I not had a tarp down, I would have had a ton of human urine on my new couch. People in Aliso also didn't pick up after their dogs. Never had this problem with my yard in SA.

It's not really about race or who lives where. There are white and hispanic people who live here in SA, and white and hispanic who live in Aliso. I just found that people had a different attitude in South County (it's not my grass so I don't have to pick up my dog's crap...their gardener can deal with it). At least where I am now, people tend to respect their neighbors. Especially since it's a tougher city, people tend to look out for their neighbors, as long as you're a reasonable, friendly person.

I don't know how much those numbers mean, considering the changes made to the census form in 2010. Here's a little background....

Quote:
Since 1980 the U.S. Census bureau has classified Hispanics as an ethnic group who can belong to any race--white, black, Native American, etc. But for decades the bulk of Latinos chose to identify as "other." The 2010 census form, however, directed Hispanics to choose a specific racial category.

The outcome has been a 6 percent rise in the U.S. white population, with the amount of Hispanics identifying as white jumping from 48 percent in 2000 to 53 percent in 2010.

More Hispanics Identifying as White
Bottom line, you can't directly compare the census numbers from 2000 and 2010, because people have changed how they self-identify, based on changes to the form.

I was one of those who left during that time, but relocating from South OC to South Fontana isn't exactly fleeing Hispanics...

What year is this again?

I don't see the correlation between race relationships and the data that you provided.

How about sensible and conscientious? If I were white, I'd hate to be constantly thought of or lumped in with the other group of people who have the complete opposite values as me. Opinions and diversity can be a wonderful thing, but prejudice and assumptions can make projected self-identity incredibly frustrating. i.e, I'm sure we'd all hate to be lumped in with the Real Housewives of Orange County (ironically, they are all transplants and plastic...so much for Real).
