I never really understood what the Santa ana winds are.

So when it's really hot, like before I was in Lakewood/Signal hill, is that due to the Santa ana winds? I was wondering how sometimes it's just so hot outside, whether it's because of the Santa ana winds or not.

It's more often than that! It's the heat that accompanies them that most people don't like. I have asthma, so I'm no fan of Santa Anas.

Here's another take, from an L.A. author:
"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot, dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that, every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen."

About the only reason I liked the Santa Ana winds in the fall was that they cleared out the smoggy air. Other than that, I don't particularly like it when they come sweeping down from the north.
