I'm wondering what the average percentage is taken from paychecks in Orange County on a salary of $40k. I know it depends on a lot of variables (employers, health insurance, worker's comp, etc.) I also understand that making a higher income usually means a higher tax rate. I'm just trying to get an estimate.

Here in Washington, we have no state income tax (as of now) and we average 83% take home pay after taxes.

Thanks

I'm just asking for an average of take home pay from paychecks. That is all.

There will be more than just me and more than just $40k to live off of. I was NOT asking about living costs, just the take home pay average of that salary. Geesh!

That's not what I asked. I never said I was trying to live off $40k. It was just a number for referencing tax percentages. So someone could base their answer off that amount instead of $10k or $1million.

Why do people always start assuming and fail to answer the actual question that was asked?

after taxes, 8% 401k contribution, FSA, and small amounts towards medical insurance premiums I take home about 72% of my gross salary every pay period. however, if i didn't own a home the taxes withheld would not be enough and I'd owe both the state and the feds money at the end of the year. you might as well assume that 1/3 of each of your paychecks will never be seen by you.
