I'd like to think that it just some of LA's culture to do that. It's so prevalent....

Because saying, "Take 57, then get off at Katella" sounds odd. Why is just 57? It is the freeway, designated 57. So, it's the 57 freeway.
It may not seem so to you, but we have it in us and you have it in you. We will never have an actual explanation for this phenomenon because it is whatever sounds right to you.

A coworker calls it Cal. I'd bet your head would explode from that one?

Yeah, friends I have in Orange County, call it "The OC" I barf on my shoes when I hear it.

Things have changed since I've been gone, then.

OC was always just "OC." Only transplants and tourists used "the" OC. We saved "the" for freeways .

I thought I was the only one who hated the word "Cali". Since I moved to the East Coast everyone tends to say "Oh you're from Cali"...to which I reply I am from California. It drives me crazy when they say Cali.

You're funny! It's embarrassing to be from Orange County, California any more. Between the Orange County Housewives, the reputation of the surfer mentality, the pretentious new money folks (some of whom aren't so moneyed anymore), the overly zealous Orange County Sheriffs, I cringe when traveling and someone asks where I'm from.

Ironically, the only orange groves I know of here anymore are in a little outdoor museum which consists of a few orange trees. It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.

So I'm moving out of state. Can't take it anymore. And when my new friends and my family tell me not to say "The 5" or "The 405" or everyone will know I'm not from there, I'll say, "Well, I'm not."

You sure he's not referring to the greatest school in the world?

I have been unable to break that habit of saying "the" before any highway, but then nobody has ever sweated me for it, so I guess it's not a big deal.

If anything, you'll be adding some linguistic color to your new community.
