Go to a lower/middle income neighborhood, preferably one in which at least half the advertising is written in Spanish. (I was just at SNA (John Wayne) airport last week. From there take South Main street north from the airport and go maybe one or two miles.) Do not go to a chain. Look for something mom&pop. Listen for Ranchera Music. If on a weekday around lunchtime you see a couple of old beat up pickup trucks parked there with lawnmowers in the back, you are probably OK. When you walk inside, look for a little cart with chilled radishes and peppers and salsas. Take a few with you in a little plastic bowl and cap.
Here's what I order: Carne Asada burrito, no cheese, no guacamole (and no other "gringo" ingredients) extra onions and cilantro. Make sure its is prepared with refried beans, not black beans.
Enjoy it with a (couple or more of) Carta Blanca or Modelo (Modelo is the brewery of Corona and Corona is Modelo's cheap brand.)
Man, I'm getting hungry.

Chronic Tacos (San Clemente, Huntington Beach, Dana Point)
Pedros Tacos (2 in San Clemente, one in San Juan Cap)
Dave's Tacos (San Clemente)
If you're ever in Texas or Santa Barbara, try Freebird's also

Go down Bradford in Placentia and look for a place called Q Tortas. Get anything with carnitas.

Fullerton:
El Camino Real, near the corner of Euclid and Malvern. Order anything on the menu; it's all good.
Brea:
Pepe's, on Brea Blvd, about a mile south of Imperial Hwy. Try the chile relleno burrito. It will take a year of two off of your lifespan, but it is divine (in fact, I think I'm going to go get one right now!).

I used to eat at Freebirds all the time in Isla Vista. But I think they changed or something. The burritos they made in the mid 1990s did seem authentic. there was something called the Monster or double Monster or something like that which was like two or three normal huge burritos. I don't think I was able to ever finish one.

Teachers at my high school were nuts about Q Tortas... I haven't been there in years, but it was great the last time I did. ^_^

Definitely Alertos! Open late, pretty decent prices, and always good. I always get the carne asada burrito.
Fountain Valley (Brookhurst & Slater I believe, next to del across from fv lanes) and theres also one if you go north on Brookhurst, i think its in Westminster.

I posted about this restaurant in another thread, but I would encourage you to try a little hole-in-the-wall place named Hacienda Flores in Orange. They're located in a strip mall at the intersection of Main and Chapman. Their burritos are HUGE and VERY reasonably priced.
