Default Corona del Mar vs. Laguna Beach?

We found a little (and I do mean little!) house in Corona del Mar (Cameo Highlands - anyone know it?) we are considering. Husband has his heart set on Laguna Beach though - but Laguna Beach prices seem out of reach.

We have 2 kids (6 and 2), are looking for a laid-back culture, close to the beach, kid-friendly and fun for the grown-ups too.

Is the culture of CDM a lot different than Laguna Beach? I've heard Newport is more "see and be seen" which is not our thing. Is CDM more like Newport, or more like Laguna Beach? CDM seems a little bit easier to commute from since you can use Newport Coast.

Anyone know if the commute in-and-out of Laguna Beach is as bad as I'm guessing? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks!

Also look into San Clemente if you want a really laid back lifestyle right at the beach. It is more affordable, but still very prestigious. It is the OC coast after all. Laguna has a great village feel, but becomes very crowded in the summer and during festival season.

The choice between Laguna and Newport is a choice between beauty and convenience.

If you want laid back you may prefer San Clemente or San Diego.

Also I think there are many areas in Laguna that are a lot cheaper than Cameo Highlands.

Laguna is eccentric and unique, the whole village works to raise children together, the sense of community is amazing. Corona del Mar has, well, money, thats all. But in laguna you are kind of boxed in, commuting may be difficult, the canyon gets packed. If you do choose CDM try to land on balboa island. Very quaint and tight knit, similar to laguna.
