Default costa mesa areas

Looking to possibly rent a home in Costa Mesa - specifically around Wilson St. I have read a lot of negative comments on this board about Costa Mesa and wondering if anyone can offer any specific details about the above area. thanks!

I know someone who lives north of Wilson between Harbor and Fairview. Its not a bad looking neighborhood. The areas off Wilson get seedier the further west you go. Keep in mind the traffic in that area is pretty bad and the OC Fair every summer makes it even worse.

Definitely stay East of Harbor BLVD. The areas there are older, but still seem nice. The traffic will be a major headache however.

West of Placentia isn't too bad either. The further west, the better.

You really need to walk/bike the area in order to get a true feeling of it. Costa Mesa has the characteristic of being sometimes radically different from just one block to the next. Or even one house to the next, as Costa Mesa building laws are apparently very lax in regards to who can build what & where. There's also an unpleasant mix of residential and commercial/light industrial use.

If for some reason you can't physically go and visit the area yourself, the next best thing is to 'walk' it on Google Maps.

thanks for your honesty! Does not sound too appealing. Back to the drawing board I guess (or maps!)

Keep in mind there are also some extremely nice areas of CM. If that areas is appealing, and remember I would not move back, check it out. After all, you would never have known the city as I did in my youth, so it would not be a disappointment to you, as it is now to me.
