I have been looking at houses in the Yorba Linda/Anaheim Hills area and was told by someone local that North/South facing houses are ideal. Does anyone have any experience with houses in this area that could provide some input on pros/cons on these directions? The one house I'm interested in faces East and hope the sun and heat beating down through the front and into the backyard won't be intolerable. There aren't any significantly large windows facing either of these directions but there are several facing East into the backyard. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Most definitely it makes a difference.

The ideal shape and house orientation is the longer sides running east and west. The shorter east and west sides having the least amount of windows. The backyard faces south and has the most windows. This assumes you like to kick back in your back yard in January and enjoy the warm sun. I do.

This way you get the least radiated heat in the summer from the east and west sides.

In the winter the sun comes in through those south facing windows and you get free heat.

Plant deciduous trees on both the east and west sides of the house to keep the sun off your home.

Do these things and you almost don't need air conditioning.
