I just found out today that I have been paying for the gas and electricity in the shared garage and laundry room. We have lived in our apartment for 8 months now and had no idea. We just recently found the breaker box in a closet and it has the garage and laundry room switches on it. We also had a problem with the gas and they had to shut it off so thats how we found out we were paying for the gas in the laundry room. What can I do about this???

Get an attorney. Sue the pants off your landlord.

This is probably against some city code and I'd contact Edison, gas company and the city to see what they say. The situation might help to get you out of the lease. A lawyer would know and probably talking with lawyer is a good idea. I would compare the utility bills with your neighbors that don't have this situation and see how much you are getting over charged. Whatever X 8 months and see if it worth paying an attorney to sue. There is always small claims court. It probably isn't that much if you are just noticing it now after 8 months.
