Hi,
We are relocating to Southern California and have been looking at different family friendly and safe neighborhoods. I found Ladera Ranch and thought it seems like the perfect place for a family with small kids.

Then I started to read about earthquake risk and the fault line that is just next to the San Onofre nuclear plant (Ladera is 16miles away). Are people in general scared of a new Fukushima happening here? Another thing that puts me of is new studies showing where they have seen leukemia among children being twice as common when living within 5km from a nuclear plant. Study Finds More Childhood Cancer Near Nuclear Power Plants | Germany | DW.DE | 08.12.2007

What do you guys think. Are people in OC worried about these risks?

Thanks,
Anna

I did most of my growing up ~9 miles North of the plant and many of the people I went to high school with (as well as people older and younger than I) were well within the 5km distance. I'm not aware of overly frequent leukemia occurrences amongst them.

I suggest if you're worried, live farther than 5km from the plant.

I've seen your picture. Now I understand the problem.

That study looks pretty weak. They found a statistical correlation, not causality or any mechanism for causality. This is another one of those "90% of all people killed in car accidents had eaten carrots within the last month" kinds of studies.

Hey, I look like hell, but so far... no leukemia.
