I tried searching posts, but didn't find anything that answered this question. Many questions that include the topic of race tend to get way off track.
My family is looking to move to HB next year. My daughter will be graduating high school and we are also hoping she will come with and attend college in the area. We are unsure if she will be in OC area, SD or LA. But, she would be home alot. We want to know what areas would be safest, most comfortable and least animosity towards bi-racial families?
I wasn't sure if there were better cities on OC, than HB, for us. I have read that SD and LA are more diverse, but we like the idea of HB. It is smaller and located near my in-laws.
We have been to HB many times to visit, but we haven't been long enough to get a real feel of it.
This isn't to start an ignorant rant and rave between people who try to make everything about race. Obviously, we are not racist, we are also not easily offended by anything. We are just aware that bi-racial families are more accepted in some parts of the world than others.

Thank you!

HB is probably fine. It has a reputatin for hicks/rednecks, but that is just an absurd generalization. Sometimes and in some areas you may encounter such problems, but not on a regular basis. It really should not be a problem anywhere in OC. In most of OC people are more concerned with how much you make and what brands you wear and drive than about skin color or cultural background. Most of the rest of the people just do not care. Mixed families are not that uncommon, or at least they do not seem to be. Four of our friends are mixed race families. No one seems to care really. Maybe some old people mutter quietly behind their hands, but so what? You cannot hear them anyway.

Correctamundo. It's OC, not the hollers of Appalachia.

Which parts are those?

Anyway, California is the most progressive land in the world. If you arent't accepted here you won't be anywhere. Acceptance of diversity is what California does the best. Just don't look too closely at the State Budget, home prices or the umpteen other difficulties the State has.

Enjoy!!!

As conservative as OC is known to be, and as white as it is in some places, it is actually fairly diverse. There aren't many African-Americans in OC, but there are some huge Asian and Latino populations, and there are plenty of kids who are obviously the products of mixed parents.

That being said, I can't speak from experience whether there are any issues that mixed raced families encounter. I can tell you for sure that there is racism in OC, though it is veiled and not very overt. It has come up in conversations that I've had with people.

But, as Dean Trails pointed out, California has a rich history of diversity, and Orange County seems more focused on success and achievement than skin color or ethnicity. I was quite worried about a lack of diversity and the cultural and political conservatism of OC before we moved here, but everything has been fine for us. Then again, we don't interact a lot with people other than our next door neighbors, co-workers, and some friends we've made through Meetup groups.

I can assure you that there are racists and fear mongering political lunatics that live in OC, but I would be surprised if you encountered any overt racism or any serious problems living in HB or elsewhere in the county.

Maybe Fullerton for a fairly equal distribution of races (Asian, Hispanic, and White.. everyone minus Blacks which aren't well represented in OC)

I never had any problems in Newport Beach, now the federal government did plenty to my folks a good number of years back. They are Native Americans, so they had no business in their own homes...

Funny thing is... I moved to the end of the Trail of Tears on my own. Much to the disdain of those that sent all the ones before me... I like it!

I don't think anyone will bother you in O.C. depending on if you get out of the "low brow" areas. Newport, H.B., Some parts of Costa Mesa, Corona del Mar... I never had any problems..

Thank you for all the honest answers. I appreciate all the advice. We are white, native american and black. I feel more comfortable after hearing a few opinions. I can't wait to live there. I am very excited.
Thanks again!

Garden Grove is even better for that.
