Which is an extra ~5-20% on the revolving debt depending on loan amount (read: a lot)

This is true, but when I owned a house, my maintenance costs came out about the same (roughly $100 a week, plus my time), plus I had to pay a yearly community association fee of $450.

Now I have a pool. a tennis court and nice landscaping / waterscaping.
