I recently moved to Irvine for work, but had previously lived in Los Angeles. I would like to travel up to LA on weekends and my days off, but I don't have a car. It's ridiculously expensive to take a cab.

Are there any buses or trains that can take me directly from Irvine to Los Angeles?

Don't forget about Amtrak since Metrolink has limited weekend service.

Thanks. I think I'd probably travel via Amtrak, as the Metrolink's schedule is a bit limiting. There's definitely more times available for departure and return.

You can take metrolink and then upgrade to amtrak if there are not trains for you when you want to leave. It is a nice trip, but when you get there, the subway mostly takes you to downtown locations and there is not much downtown on weekends. You can get to a few decent places but most of them are more weekday destinaton than weekend. Better yet, you can take the train to the beach in San Clemente.

Metrolink is $21 RT on the weekdays from Irvine to LA, it's $10 for the entire weekend (Friday at 7pm to Sunday at midnight). There are discounts for monthly passes (which also allow you to ride the Amtrak Surfliner) and 7-day passes. I don't know Amtrak's pricing.

Also, having a metrolink ticket allows you to use the metro light rail and most MTA buses in LA. At least that's how it used to be a few years back.

A year ago, the Metrolink ticket still allowed you to the MTA buses and subway in L.A (as that is when I used it). I know that the Metrolink tickets are cheaper than the Amtrak ones but Amtrak trains are much more frequent as Metrolink tends to run mainly according to a weekday rushhour schedule.

I've never met anyone in So Cal without a car. But I've only lived here for 23 years.
