Thank you DinsdalePirahna. That is exactly the type of response I am looking for. Any additional information or recommendations that people could provide about Huntington Beach vs. Newport Beach would be great. Also, would appreciate additional responses on neighborhoods and where within these two areas people would live.

Each depends on what part of the city you go to. Huntington has varous different areas too. I do not know the names of them, but I know where they are. The main beach area is as described, younger frat type atmosphere and surfur dudes. The harbor is more high end. Multi million dollar homes. Quiet. Boats.

Inland there are different types of neighborhoods from high end to trailer parks.

Newport is also many different areas as described. However Balboa Village is also a youngish crowd for the most part, but it is less of a party atmosphere. quite a few UCI kids staked up like cordwood in their bedrooms to offset the cost. Tons of tourists and visitors. There is a wealthy area (the point). Balboa village is my favorite part of Newport Beach. It is a small town atmosphere in the winter. Crazy hubub in the summer. There are just too many people around in the summer to pigeonhole it. You will find every kind of people. Nightlife in Balboa is more evening life. Not many stay out late. The days are too fun to sleep in. They used to prohibit dancing in places that serve alcohol, not sure whether that law is changed. It is hard to get in and out of Balboa in the summer. It used to take me 18 minutes go get to work in the morning and 1.5 hours to get home (work was in Orange). Getting a pass for the residents only lane helps a lot, but you have to get to that lane before it can do you any good.

Ideally you want to live within 1.5 miles of PCH.

Even our worse area (bounded by Beach, Gothard, Slater and Edinger) isn't that bad, I would not want to live there, but many good people do.

Um yea... We are discussing the city of IRVINE here specifically regarding nightlife. Irvine has NO nightlife. The OP wants nightlife by the beach, Miami has got that in spades.
