Hi all,
Is it idiotic to try moving back to Orange County (Tustin area) with a $50k income?

Using a rule of thumb 1/3 of $50K for annual housing, that's about $1400/month.

Yikes...
Quick search on apartments there show that I would need about $1600 to get a 2 bedroom apt.

Can't you lower your standards?

I think that's already low haha.
I would need at least 2 bedrooms though... I got 3 kids (2 toddlers, and a newborn).

If you were single and debt-free, $50k would be doable. With 3 kids, forget it.

I'm married... close to debt-free.

I'm just not very confident of the school system here in Las Vegas, in addition to being extremely home sick. I would really like to move back, but just stressing out on how to make it work.

Would it be better to wait out a year or two, and save up for a down payment on a house versus moving and renting now?

How much do you think you can save (with the expenses of having three kids)?

What about inland? Corona, Riverside, etc? You wouldn't be far from friends/relatives in Tustin (if that's where they are).

What about a job? You haven't written anything about that. Where would you be working? Is it Tustin?

I work in Irvine near Alton and Irvine and several people commute via train from Riverside. You might make that work to a job in Tustin.

Unless you can save $250k+ in the next two years, buying a house isn't going to happen. You'd still need to be afford the monthly payment and taxes. $50k doesn't go very far in OC. People making $50k share apartments, live in 1 bedroom apartments, or live with their parents. My wife and I combine for a lot more than $50k, only have 1 kid, have no debt, and its still tough.
