Oh my gosh!! You were in San Clemente right on the coastal strip with every OC beach town at your fingertips. I'm not sure what you were expecting but geez, come on now.
It's not like you were stuck for two weeks in Stanton or La Habra.

Nah..not me.
I like the sun shining first thing. It helps me wakeup and feel energized. Yeah, the one thing I hate about OC is the morning gloom. It's not even a cool and brisk gloom like you have in the Bay Area. It's more of a gunky and stagnate, humid gloom. It feels gross.

Hmmm, to each his own, but I'm really scratching my head on this one. I was out there at 5 AM today walking my dogs, and it felt cool and comfortable. It was great. My dogs also seemed to enjoy the weather as they were not panting.

I checked the national weather service site a few minutes ago and the temp in my near coastal (ocean is 10 min away) OC city was 57 @ 7:56 AM with a Dew point of 53.

According to this scale, 53 is perceived by most to be very comfortable:

To each their own I think, 53 to me is freaking freezing :P 75+ or bust! But that's why I lived a little more inland haha.

If the everyday reality of Orange County proves to be too ordinary and disappointing , hey, there is always The OC :

I've only been in OC for 2.5 weeks. The ONLY reason I moved to South OC, which I don't even like very much, was to be very close to school, knowing that I could at least drive to LBC, LA or SD on weekends. I got a great deal on housing that was hard to turn down, but I was going to live north of here, in far north county or south L.A. County (e.g.: Long Beach, Cerritos), and make the long haul down.

I'm already wishing I had sucked it up and moved up there after all. The Bay Area wasn't a particularly friendly place, I'll admit, but when I got know some people, things kinda began to fall into place. I still enjoyed it, even from the get go, and the natural beauty, views, dining, and weather (including the cool, brisk mornings) made it invigorating. South OC is gaudy, pretentious, almost NO ONE (and I mean almost NO ONE) looks happy to be alive, and the customer service everywhere I go is usually fair at best; North OC is more down to Earth and older, but people still don't look very happy up there.

Oh, and about that customer service: I've already received more curt, aloof/disinterested, and/or unfriendly service in two WEEKS here than I did in the two YEARS I lived in the Bay Area.

Disappointing indeed.

It's definitely not a "stagnate" gloom, although it may be a stagnant one.

Anyway, I stayed in San Clemente. Went everywhere in OC including Laguna Beach, Hiking in Laguna Niguel, Disney Land Anaheim (dumpy), Irvine (nice), Mission Viejo, etc. Like, I said I was there for 2 whole weeks.

It was just OK. I didn's specifically say it was awful, it just left me thinking "whats the big deal?".....
so, u and ur old man friend there can live happily ever after together in OC...... cuz u know...it's the best place to live. lol
thats the thing about OC actually California in general its placed on such a high pedestal as a kid growing up California was always known as the place to be and i guess when you build that up in your mind for so long then when you finally do go there your just like "oh so this is what all the fuss was about??Its not much different from my home town."

me personally am one of those people who am obsessed with moving there but ive never actually been there yet who knows maybe ill end up being like you and ask my self what all the hype was about to begin with

I haven't lived in the Bay Area for decades so I can't compare the two. But I'm intrigued by your comment about people not generally appearing "happy to be alive". I've noticed the same thing. I grew up in Seattle and have lived in almost every region of the country. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised that your comment seems accurate in our observation. Disagree with you about South OC being gaudy, though. We think where we are and where we're spending most of our time is gorgeous (laguna niguel, dana point, laguna beach). But smiling, happy people are hard to find unless they're easy to recognize as tourists. maybe that explains why, in spite of its natural beauty and wonderful weather, this area never shows up on any "happiest" lists. I wouldn't describe this area as one where the people seem happy yet there's so much to do and see that are typically ascribed to as effective ways to lift one's mood. Kind of an odd phenomenon.

I no longer hold the OC on it's once illustrious pedestal. And it's kind of disappointing.

It was OK in it's day, but that passed about 20 years ago.
