I am moving to Irvine for graduate school and I have a kindergarten son who is currently in a spanish immersion 90/10 program. I would like to find a similar public (read: free) program in the OC area. I know of El Sol Academy in Santa Ana, and Ralph Gates in Lake Forest (which is 50/50). I'm open to other suggestions but could anyone speak to either of these schools? I am very interested in the El Sol Academy but I read that it has a waiting list of 400? I would be moving in December of this year so my son would start in January.

Also, if anyone know about before and after school care (times/cost/quality), I would like more info about that as well.

Thanks!

I believe there is a Spanish Immersion program through the Capistrano Unified School District but I do not know anything about it. Try calling their main office in San Juan Capistrano for information.

Out of curiosity, what is the reason for wanting to place your child in such a program?

So kids can learn Spanish at an early age, but I think I know what you mean--why Spanish? I personally would seek out another language before I would Spanish. Spanish is really not that hard to learn, especially since we have so many Spanish speakers here in Southern California to practice with.

Chinese, Vietnamese and probably other languages are so much harder. In Vietnamese, for instance, you have to get the tone/pronunciation almost exact or it's a completely different word. It's very hard, though not impossible, for an adult to get these tones correct, so starting young is so important. I'm trying to get my kids to speak 2 other languages now. They understand 3, but will only speak in English

If I had kids they would learn Mandarin, not Spanish. You can learn that in CA or TX for free.
