Default do you think i could move to the O.C and what are the nice places to live in the O.C

im new to this so i dont know what to put really!
im a 19year old female from england and its always been my dream to live in california or florida!
ive heard the O.C is very expensive to live but i have my heart set on it and want to do it whilest im young!
im an advanced beauty therapist and im currently studying more courses such as holistic courses and business and physcology whilest i gain more salon work experience! ( ive already had 3 years salon experience! )
i was thinking of continuing my studies in england for a few years and then maybe getting a job in the O.C and move with my partner! and then maybe opening a business out there!
one thing i know is, in england beauty therapists arent very highly paid, and im asuming its the same in america and i understand it wont just happen like THAT!
but i just want to know... is it an unrealistic goal or do i have a chance???
thanks 4 all advice given
xxxx

Why do you want to live in California or Florida specifically? There are many beautiful places in the United States that are much more affordable. Since you are calling it "the OC" I'm assuming your dream is based on television, since no one in Orange County actually calls it "the OC". Television is not reality.

If you want a warm climate and to live in America, there are places throughout the southwest and southeast to consider. Most cosmetologists aren't very highly paid (there are exceptions, those who work themselves up to a very upscale clientele), and your money would go a lot further in just about anyplace but California. That said, if you REALLY wanted to set up your home and business in Orange County, you could do so by working hard, living in a tiny apartment, saving enough money and working up a good enough credit to get a small business loan. And even then there is no guarantee of success, and your lifestyle would be far from glamorous. I hope you like ramen noodles!

Instead of investing yourself in a fantasy, I would advise fully exploring the reality of your options. If you do so thoroughly, I think it's unlikely you would decide that Orange County is the wisest choice. Have you even visited?

"OC" = Acceptable and used by locals
"The OC" = Invented by a TV show and using it marks you as a someone who gets their ideas about OC from TV. Like calling San Francisco "Frisco"

I'm not sure how far you would get with that sort of attitude. It might be OK up north in the Wirral but I'm sure you would struggle somewhere more competative.

You need a work permit if you are going to move. Housing costs there are similar, if not more, than London, and a hell of a lot more than the Liverpool area.

Come out and visit. It is beautiful out here. You'll love the weather and the food. As far as making a living out here... There are plenty of other pleaces in the USA that are just as lovely, have genuinly nice people, more affordable, and will provide you with a better quality of life. If you want to get a better understanding of what life is like in OC ,see if you can find a TV show called "The Real Housewives of Orange County". Most people here won't admit it, but if they are not currently living the lifestyle of these housewives, they sure are striving to live like them.

With that said, I'm escaping Orange County and Southern California this summer and headed for greener pastures. Good luck to you.

zennjenn: Take that attitude back to New York where it belongs.

oc2nyc will become famous soon enoughoc2nyc will become famous soon enough
My advice to you is that if you want have a dream, you might as well follow it while you are young. But I would also tell you to talk to the people you know who live in CA. They may make a lot of money, which makes life easy here. If you don't, life may be a little harder, not impossible, just harder.
You can find work as a waitress, or hairdresser, or a nanny perhaps, and make enough money to have a small apartment with a room mate in a safe area. You need to realize as well that Orange County is not a pedestrian friendly place. You will need to own a car, as our mass transit system is nothing like other cities, such as New York, Chicago, or London. I would also check the Florida board to get a feel for where nice places are there too. I believe that the cost of living there may be a little less than here in OC, but it may depend on where you settle. Whatever you decide do your homework. Travel while you have the ability to, but don't limit yourself to just CA. There are some beautiful states here in the US. Good luck honey!
