POLL: Is "The Real Housewives of Orange County" REALLY Indicative of The O.C.?
I apologize if a poll similar to this one has already been posted on this sub-forum in the past, but I couldn't find one. I must say that I was watching Bravo yesterday and saw a show called "The Real Housewives of Orange County," which is apparently a drama series about the social lives of middle-aged women in Orange County. Is there any merit at all to this show, or is this completely slanted against the way middle-aged women in Orange County behave? I must say that the one character has the mouth of a sailor, and another looks like she's had one too many nose jobs!

Come on, when is a reality show really reality?
Oh how we love watching rich people make a$$es out of themselves.
95% of OC does not behave like this at all.

The show is a bit exaggerated, but like I've stated in another post, if you're living in OC and you aren't currently living the Coto lifestyle, you certainly are striving to get there.
I remember when people who drove BMWs and Mercedes were actually wealthy. You don't know how many people lease them now only to park them in the parking structure of their apartments. Looks great on the outside but what counts is on the inside.
In short, the competition is fierce at the top of the food chain. These women are all fighting for attention and self worth. Forget about keeping up with the Jones'. The people are fighting to be the Jones'. As for the kids, all are spoiled and do not know the value money, character, or integrity.

Not necessarily, But looking at the hot MILFs on the show is indicative of what the rest of the country is interested in.

What I've highlighted in bold is actually a nationwide phenomenon it would seem. My area's median family income is $52,500. Nevertheless practically 1/3 of the vehicles on the roadways here are BMWs, Audis, Mercedes-Benzes, Range Rovers, Porsches, Infinitis, Jaguars, Navigators, Escalades, and other high-end vehicles. It always amazes me to see folks who are apparently earning such low salaries going to such great lengths to live beyond their means in order to impress people. I'm not impressed by an inner-city rapper tooling around in an Escalade with tinted windows, an expensive stereo system, and spinners on its wheels. I would be impressed to see this person pull himself up by the boot straps to go to college, earn a degree in a specialized field, and then do something to give back to society other than writing song lyrics about "hangin' with da homies" or "bartenders."
Living extravagantly has never impressed me. If anything, I have less respect for people like that who are driving themselves deeper and deeper into financial debt just to make themselves "look good" instead of living within their means and giving a little bit every now and then to charity. All of my college peers tool around in new vehicles. I drive a 1998 Ford piece of junk. Do I care what others think of me? No. Why should anyone judge another based upon what is in their driveway or bank account? Petty...if you ask me.

I think it involves the fact that the United States is rapidly becoming an intellectual wasteland. I know people who adjust their entire social lives around being able to watch "Dancing With the Stars", "The Bachelor", "Nip/Tuck", or "American Idol." Mention TLC, History Channel, Discovery Channel, etc. to these people, and they stare at you blankly with their jaws dropped. I'd at least appreciate it if folks who didn't have the patience to watch an occasional documentary to enrich their minds would watch a show like Myth Busters, for example, in which you learn something while being entertained. What do you learn from American Idol other than the fact that Simon Crowell is a jerk?

On the other hand, the dumber they are the richer we get.

If it weren't for the TLC, History Channel, Discovery Channel and Sports we wouldn't watch TV at all in my house.
Actually I would cancel cable, I don't even like watching the news anymore.

I think this show is probably more indicative of Coto and areas like it. Just as that show, "The Real Orange County Laguna Beach" is probably fairly representative of high school kids along the coast. But overall, not representative of OC as a whole.
I thought they should have done, "The Really Real Orange County", about a family of Mexican immigrants struggling to live in Santa Ana. There are probably more people in OC in that situation than middle-aged bimbos and their poorly-raised, spoiled brat children living in gated communities.

The majority of Californians think owning things makes them a big deal.
You'll see folks driving $60k cars into one bedroom apartment complexes, as long as they look good on the street they'll live in a toilet.
Folks here are always trying to outdo each other, who's got the newest phone or the biggest 'financed' motorhome in the driveway.
I run the IT dept in my co and most of the 19 year olds have a better cell phone and home computer than me. Then you see them taking the bus to work.
Folks here are completely wrapped up in who has what, that's why THE Real Housewives is such a hit, folks here relate!
