We decided to move with my family and husband and kids to orange county California or San Diego or LA! We are moving from the Las Vegas area but we came from the eastcoast. We like orange county because we have been there before when we went to disneyland in 2012 which my daughters loved and we loved the water and the sunshine. The problem is that I have heard from a lot of people that orange county is very racist and I do not want to end up dead or hurt or have my daughters hurt. I heard about people going to a store and no one pays attention if your Black. Is this true? We are also considering San Diego and LA but we also heard that San Diego and LA do not have that much diversity except Latinos and Chinese. We also heard about San Bernadino is it ok.

We are looking to rent in a diverse area that is very safe with good schools and near shopping. Is there a city where we can kind this? We also need an area that has African American hair specialists there. We can move to different places depending on where we get approved for.

We are also Christian and do not want gays and other things against the bible around us where we live no offense to people but we do not agree with that.

We do not want to live near industry since we are worried about asthma and bad weather from climate change and pollution. We did before and it is not healthy.

First, I recommend doing a quick search within these forums by typing in key words/phrases like "racism OC" "racism orange county" "black in orange county" "diversity in OC" and "skinheads in OC". You will find endless threads with opinions from all sides. If you're too lazy for that, a quick summary: Yes, there is racism in O.C., we have a history of a strong KKK presence (back in the day) and some current skinhead activity. No, you went end up dead because of your race - or, if anything, it is incredibly unlikely. I can't say the same for L.A. where I read that it is dangerous to be a black man in its Latino neighborhoods. Also, the racism you would experience here, if any (since it is a very diverse county with people of all shades and backgrounds) is not the in your face type, and tends to be concentrated where older white folks live (like Yorba Linda and some parts of south O.C.).

If you want to live in diverse neighborhoods, that are safe and that also have decent to great schools, try central O.C. (Irvine/Tustin/Orange) and north O.C. (Cypress, Fullerton, parts of Buena Park, La Palma). Of those Irvine is the priciest, but it just about guaranteed that your children will be in a good school, while the other areas are more dependent on the neighborhood/school district.

As to an area with 'African American hair specialists', you will have to look that on Yelp. O.C. has one of the lowest percentages of African Americans anywhere in the state (only 1.5%), and honestly I can't remember ever seeing a hair salon that catered to the African American/black community. I've seen them in Long Beach, which has some great neighborhoods with good schools and very diverse (like California Heights near Bixby Knolls), but Long Beach is one of the gayest cities in America, so that doesn't exactly fit in with your "values".

L.A. overall is very diverse, but it is a segregated diversity, with the exceptions of the dense area of central L.A. and the San Fernando valley. The SFV might be your best option there as I've never heard anyone say that central L.A. has good schools. The SGV is made up of Latinos and Asians, and educated white folk who mostly live in Pasadena.

I don't know much about S.D., so can't comment on that.

If you are considering San Bernardino (I don't know who would, but ok), then check out the nice areas of Riverside and Corona. They tend to be more conservative inland, so it might fit you better in that sense.

One last note: remember same sex marriage is legal in California, and even the most conservative of counties (say Orange County for example, which is Republican lead) tend to be rather progressive and cosmopolitan when compared to red-neck country in the Midwest, the South and Florida.

Good luck

A place like Irvine would be one of the safest cities you could live in the entire USA (statistically). You will also find many conservative Christians that think homosexuality is a sin. True that there are not as many black people in OC, but the diversity otherwise is quite amazing. You'll find quite a few Persians and arabs, some of whom also do not believe in homosexuality. And agreed that most racism is going to be "in the closet", and not a lot of recent problems with race related violence overall. Again, way safer than most other places. Aliso Viejo and Laguna Hills would be similar.

And for the record, I believe in same sex marriage, and hoping that if you come out here that you will grow as a person in that area.

On one hand, you are concerned about facing racism in the OC.

On the other hand, you plan to bring your xenophobia against people who may be different than you or not share your religious beliefs.

Disgustingly hypocritical attitude. You're better off somewhere in the Bible Belt where they put up with Blacks and feign the same xenophobic ideology.

Considering that the bible tells you to kill everyone from non-believers to non-virgins, I doubt you'd find a suitable place just about anywhere on earth

957Chatterton AntiTheism: Top Ten People The Bible Tells You To Kill

But do avoid Laguna Beach then...them gays are breeding like rabbits all over the place thar.

Being gay is a choice, being black is not. The bible condemns homosexuality, it does not condemn being black. Black people suffered 400 years of persecution, gays have not. Just because YOU don't believe in the bible doesn't mean millions of others don't and many millions of people are against homosexuality and that is their right. So deal with it.

To the OP, you might want to check out Long Beach. It borders LA county and Orange County and has many African Americans as well as some other cultures, it's a nice mix.

So than being straight is a choice? What an ignorant comment.

This can't be a real post. The OP doesn't even mention employment. Anyone who is actually moving to Southern CA asks about commutes. Not one mention of jobs or where to live to be within close proximity to them.

How many people move to AZ and base it on a one time visit to the Grand Canyon....LOL.

This was just created to stir the pot.

Time to close this thread.

I cannot comment on whether being homosexual is a choice or not. But the OC is not a exclusively a Bible-friendly homophobic place that also welcomes blacks with open arms.

OC is home to gay and straight people, white black latino Asian middle eastern people, people who believe in the Bible, Quran, Gita, Tipitaka, and lastly, people who do not believe in any holy book.

If one wants to be protected by racism yet expect to see a xenophobic/ prejudiced atmosphere, they can go f*** themselves.

Seething hypocrites.
